Summary:

At the beginning, Remi was a young girl who lived with her grandparents as well as her cousins. Remi and her extended family lived in a four - storey building. Her grandparents were separated but they lived in the same building. Her grandparents didn’t talk to each other. Then her aunt, Sisi Bola’s wedding was coming up so her whole family planned for it. Her parents lived in England, but they came to Nigeria for the wedding. At the wedding, all of her family member was present. Not too long after the wedding, her grandfather dies and her family mourns over his death. Later, Remi is informed that she will be traveling to England but she is not excited about it. While everyone was getting excited over her move, she didn’t want to leave her family. Remi got farewell gifts from her family and friends. Bigmama came to take Remi to England on a ship. When they got there, they settled at Aunt Betty and Uncle Theo’s house. Then Remi got ready for her new school in England. Before the school year started, Remi was very nervous because she didn’t know what to expect. When Remi got to her dorm, she felt so solitary because the girls were not nice at all. They made fun of her accent, color, hair, and background. She was in a school with rich white girls who were ignorant to the African culture. They also didn’t want to touch her because they thought that her black skin will rub off on them. After, their science teacher told the girls that skin color could not rub off on someone else. They stopped picking on her. When she got a vacation, she went to Aunt Betty and Uncle Theo’s house. Remi was slowly fitting in and forgetting her heritage. She was starting to think that she was an English girl. She also auditioned for the school choir but didn’t get in. Remi wasn’t really concerned about this but when she knew that her parents were coming to visit, she was really happy. Her parents were also happy to see her. While they were there, they decided to transfer her from her old school to a new school named Dove House School. This change didn’t affect Remi because she was already used to the English life. It was her last year in secondary school. At this new school, she has a best friend named Phoebe. She then travels to Germany. When she comes back, her schoolmates prepare for their senior dance. While talking to Phoebe about Othello she realizes that all along she has been trying to play the role of an English woman when she really was an African. She then finishes high school and applies for London University. She then travels to Nigeria to visit her family. She meets a man named Akin Williams who she had met before at her aunt’s wedding when she was a young girl. They fall in love with each other. Then Remi reminisces on her whole life.
